Professional Development Grants

NYAC and ART will together offer six $100 competitive professional development grants, three additional $100 grants will be provided by John A. Woods, and one $100 grant will be provided by the Suffolk County Library Association's Division of Academic and Special Libraries (SCLA DASL) in order to assist archives students, archivists, librarians, and others with archives or records management responsibilities to attend the meeting.

2013: Getting to the Conference

The LIU Post Campus of Long Island University is easily accessible via car, train, or bus.

By Car:
You can put the address into your GPS/Google maps and get directions that way: 720 Northern Blvd, Brookville, New York 11548

Or you can visit the  LIU Post Campus of Long Island University directions page.

By Train/Bus:
1. From Penn Station, you would take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to the Hicksville station. [Note: Hicksville is on the Port Jefferson line, but some Ronkonkoma line trains stop there too! Check out the schedule at mta.info/lirr.  From the Hicksville train station, you can either take a taxi to LIU Post, or you can hop on the Long Island NICE Bus N20.  The N20 drops you off on the LIU Post Campus of Long Island University. [View the NICE schedule here]  A taxi from Hicksville costs anywhere from $13.50 to $25 depending on which taxi company you get.

2. From Penn Station, you would take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to the Great Neck Station, on the Port Washington line. From here you can get on the N20 bus towards Hicksville, and be dropped off at the LIU Post campus. 

3. From Penn Station, you would take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Jamaica station, where you would transfer to the Oyster Bay Line. Take the Oyster Bay Line to the Greenvale station. From Greenvale, you can take a taxi to the LIU Post Campus of Long Island University. There is no bus service from this station. Arena Taxi (516-671-1848) will get you to LIU Post for around $13. 
Pro-Tip: When buying LIRR tickets, check to see if you are on a Peak train or an Off-Peak train. Westbound Peak trains are from 6am to 10am weekdays, Eastbound Peak trains are from 4pm to 8pm weekdays. Peak tickets cost more than Off-Peak tickets, and buying tickets on board the train costs more than buying tickets in the station.

Call Arena Taxi at 516-671-1848 for information regarding service and rates from Greenvale. Call Oyster Rides Taxi at 516-922-2222, or Yellow Cab at 516-931-1111 for information regarding service and rates from the Hicksville train station.

By Plane:
1. From JFK you can take the AirTrain to the LIRR Jamaica Station. From Jamaica, board a train to Hicksville, and get the N20 bus to LIU Post Campus of Long Island University.

2. From LaGuardia to the Q48 bus towards Flushing to the Roosevelt Ave/Main Street stop. Walk half a block east on Roosevelt Ave to the N20 bus stop.  Take the N20 bus towards Hicksville to LIU Post.

3. From Newark Liberty, take the NJ Transit from the Newark Airport Railroad Station to Penn Station New York. Once you are in Penn Station, follow the above directions for the LIRR.  For more information check out Newark’s page on Public Transportation.

2013 NYAC

Join your colleagues at the New York Archives Conference (NYAC) 2013 annual meeting at LIU Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY on Wednesday, June 5 through Friday, June 7, 2013.
This year’s conference will be a joint meeting with the Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan NY, Inc., (ART) and will be co-sponsored by the Palmer School of Library and Information Science at LIU Post Campus.

The conference program will include a day of workshops, a speed mentoring session, a plenary address by Jason Kucsma of the Metropolitan New York Library Council, concurrent sessions on a full range of archival topics, roundtables, a Thursday evening reception, a Friday luncheon featuring speaker Karen Falk of the Jim Henson Company Archives, and Friday afternoon tours to local archives, gardens, and historic sites.

Participants can choose to follow one of the subject tracks (digital archives and electronic records, new and small institutions, outreach, special subject archives, or a special series of workshops and sessions designed for students and new professionals) or they can select from an al a carte menu of diverse subjects such as digital preservation, web archiving, archivists and activism, performing arts archives, institutional anniversaries, social media, or censorship. A Society of American Archivists’ Digital Archives Specialist Certificate Workshop, Privacy and Confidentiality Issues in Digital Archives, kicks of the conference on Wednesday.

On-campus housing is available, and the conference is reachable via public transportation.

Conference fees are as follows: Full Conference-$65, Thursday only-$55, Friday only-$35, Full day workshop $20, Half day workshops-$15, Friday luncheon-$16; Lodging: Single room/night-$60, Double room/night-$50.
